ABQ Biopark/Tingley Beach
The ABQ Biopark consists of the Zoo, Botanic Garden, and the Aquarium. This is a recreational place located in Old Town brings people of all ages. Tingley Beach is a part of the Biological Complex as well. Tingley Beach lies adjacent to the Rio Grande and has three fishing ponds to the public. Fishing is free to the public, but a fishing license is required.
UNM helps keep up the beauty of all of these locations by picking up trash and tending to the nature along the pathways.
Albuquerque Storehouse
ABQ Storehouse is the largest food pantry in New Mexico. They provide FREE food to people who are struggling with illness, a reduction of work hours, or any setback that can leave a family wondering where their next meal is coming from. They are a private agency and work off of donations of money and food and the work of volunteers.
UNM volunteers at the beginning of each month and helps families get food in their cart and then offering a helping hand to load their car or get ready for the city bus
Casa Esperanza
Casa Esperanza provides appropriate housing and emotional support for patients and their families who reside temporarily in Albuquerque, while a patient receives medical treatment. They have 28 rooms that are fully furnished and completely private.
UNM volunteered for a silent and live auction that helped raise money for Casa Esperanza. It was a fun night for all as we were able to dress up 50s style.
Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity
Founded in 1987, it is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. They are part of a global, nonprofit housing organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide. They work by construction, rehabilitating and preserving homes by advocating for fair and just housing policies and providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.
UNM continually works with Habitat for Humanity, we have helped make an impact in the lives of families. UNM has been responsible for many things like painting walls, placing floorboards, putting up siding, etc.
Roadrunner Food Bank:
Roadrunner has been in Albuquerque since 1980 and helping serve the hungry in the state of New Mexico. They are part of a statewide network of hunger-relief organizations and a member of Feeding America. Through their network they regularly feed 70,000 people in our state. That figure is equivalent to feeding a city the size of Santa Fe every week.
There are three locations in ABQ, with UNM CKI volunteering at the food distribution center on Office Blvd. We have helped sort produce into boxes that will travel through the state and feed New Mexico.
